What are the misconceptions about 18650 lithium batteries.

People don't really understand the 18650 battery, and they haven't even heard of its name. They don't know that these five numbers represent a type of battery because 18650 batteries are widely used in industry, but rarely in civilian use. Most of them are used as laptop batteries. In addition, they are also commonly used in high-intensity flashlights and popular mobile power sources. But with the frequent incidents of mobile power supply explosions, 18650 also began to enter people's sight. People began to know about 18650 batteries, and they also began to misunderstand it. Misconception 1: 18650 is not safe, simple explosion

18650 lithium-ion battery

What we often refer to as 18650 in Japan actually refers to the standard appearance of batteries, which was set by Sony Corporation in Japan to save costs. Among them, 18 indicates a diameter of 18mm, 65 indicates a length of 65mm, and 0 indicates a cylindrical battery. 18650 battery originally referred to nickel hydrogen batteries and lithium-ion batteries, but because nickel hydrogen was less commonly used in the past, it mostly referred to lithium-ion batteries. The nominal voltage of a single 18650 lithium-ion battery is occasionally 3.6V or 3.7V; the discharge end voltage is occasionally 2.75V. The common capacity is 1200-3100mAh, and a capacity higher than 3400mAh is basically a false standard.

Since Sony launched it in the 1990s, the 18650 battery has always been long-lasting. 18650 batteries are widely used in the industry and electronic devices such as laptops, walkie talkies, and instruments due to their large capacity, high energy storage efficiency, good stability, no recall effect, high cycle life, and absence of toxic substances. Even the recently popular Tesla electric vehicle uses the 18650 battery pack supplied by Panasonic. Why does the battery explode? The vast majority of 18650 batteries are packaged in steel shells. Poor quality batteries, due to their lack of maintenance function, can experience a sudden increase in internal pressure when overcharged (moderately charged). When exceeded, they will explode. Short circuits, high temperatures, or battery compression, deformation, or even puncture can all cause battery explosions. Short circuit maintenance (dangerous operation, please do not imitate) High quality 18650 baths are also fine (please do not imitate)

After 30 years of development, the preparation process of 18650 batteries has become very mature. In addition to improvements in functionality, its safety is also very high. In order to prevent the sealed metal casing from bursting, 18650 batteries were originally equipped with a safety valve at the top, which is a standard feature of every 18650 battery and an important explosion-proof barrier. When the internal pressure of the battery is too high, its top safety valve will open to exhaust and reduce pressure, avoiding explosion. However, when the safety valve is opened, the chemical substances leaked from inside the battery may react with oxygen in the air at high temperatures, and there is still a possibility of fire. In addition, some 18650 batteries originally came with a maintenance board, which had functions such as overcharging, discharging, and short circuit maintenance, and had very high safety functions.

The previous incidents of mobile power bank explosions were all caused by unscrupulous manufacturers using substandard 18650 batteries or even second-hand waste electricity to save costs. The 18650 batteries produced by major battery manufacturers such as Panasonic, Sony, Samsung, etc. were indeed very safe, and the application rate of 18650 batteries was very high. We may achieve correct application and avoid battery short circuits, damage, or high temperatures in daily use, without worrying about the battery exploding. We cannot overturn a ship with just one bamboo pole, and determine the safety of 18650 based on individual defective products.
