What are the characteristics of cylindrical lithium batteries?

Cylindrical lithium batteries, especially 18650, are among the top three main battery forms due to their unique structural characteristics and standardized models. This makes it possible to have a high degree of consistency and a corresponding increase in production.

1、 Advantages of cylindrical lithium batteries
1) Good monomer consistency;
2) Monomers have good mechanical properties. Compared with square and flexible packaging batteries, closed cylindrical cells can achieve high bending strength at approximate sizes;
3) The technology is mature and the cost is low, but at the same time, the space for cost optimization has been almost consumed;
4) The energy of a single unit is small, and its form is easily controlled in the event of an accident, but this also becomes the reason why it is replaced;

Circular batteries are relatively easier to use, so the battery pack solution is simple and has good heat dissipation effect. When using square battery packs, heat dissipation issues should be addressed.

2、 Disadvantages of cylindrical lithium batteries
1) In the context of electric vehicles, there are a large number of cylindrical batteries in the battery system, which greatly increases the complexity of the battery system. Compared with the other two types of batteries, the system level cylindrical battery has a higher cost;
2) The probability of a large number of battery cell characteristics being differentiated increases under uneven temperature environmental conditions. Of course, Tesla chose 18650 at the beginning of its design, which is believed to be a helpless choice, because 10 years ago, only cylindrical batteries were eligible for mass production. The safety and thermal management requirements of batteries have been replaced by the research and development momentum of their powerful electronic control systems.

3) The space for the increase in energy density is already very small.
