Compared with soft pack lithium batteries and square lithium batteries, cylindrical lithium batteries are currently the ones that are commercialized earlier, have higher levels of production automation, and have lower costs. At present, there are mainly 18650 cylindrical lithium batteries and 21700 cylindrical lithium batteries on the market. Other common cylindrical lithium battery specifications include 14650, 17490, 18650, 21700, 26650, etc.
Cylindrical lithium batteries are divided into three types: lithium iron phosphate, lithium cobalt oxide, lithium manganese oxide, and a mixture of cobalt and manganese. The ternary material system is used, and the outer shell is divided into two types: steel shell and polymer. Batteries with different material systems have different advantages. At present, the main cylindrical lithium batteries are steel shell cylindrical lithium iron phosphate batteries. This battery has the characteristics of large capacity, high output voltage, good charge discharge cycling performance, stable output voltage, large current discharge, stable electrochemical performance, safe use, wide working temperature range, and environmental protection.
Cylindrical lithium battery structure: The single cell mainly consists of a positive electrode, negative electrode, separator, positive and negative electrode collectors, safety valve, overcurrent protection device, insulation components, and shell. The shell was originally made of steel, but currently it is mainly made of aluminum.
PTC, when the current is too high, the resistance is heated, and the accumulation of temperature will promote the increase of PTC resistance value. When the temperature exceeds a threshold, a sudden increase is equivalent to isolating the faulty unit from the overall circuit, avoiding further thermal runaway.
The difference between the two protective devices is that the former can be recycled, while the latter's protection is disposable. Once a malfunction occurs, the system must consider replacing the faulty battery to ensure its normal operation.
