Lithium ion batteries are developed from lithium batteries. To understand the difference between the two, the first step is to understand lithium batteries.
Lithium batteries use manganese dioxide or thionyl chloride as the positive electrode material and lithium as the negative electrode material, but the cycling performance of the battery is poor. During the charging and discharging cycle, lithium crystals are easily formed, causing internal short circuits in the battery. Therefore, charging such batteries is generally prohibited.
Later, Sony Corporation of Japan invented a lithium battery with carbon material as the negative electrode and lithium containing compounds as the positive electrode. During the charging and discharging process, there is no metallic lithium, only lithium ions, which is the lithium-ion battery. When the battery is charged, lithium ions form at the positive electrode of the battery and are then transferred to the negative electrode through the electrolyte. The negative electrode is a carbon layer structure with a large number of micropores. Lithium ions are embedded in the micropores of the carbon layer, and the more lithium ions embedded, the higher the charging capacity. When the battery is discharged, lithium ions detach from the carbon layer of the negative electrode and return to the positive electrode.
Lithium ion batteries use reversible delithiation carbon materials instead of metallic lithium as the negative electrode, overcoming the disadvantages of low cycle life and poor safety of lithium secondary batteries, and achieving commercialization of lithium-ion batteries. This marks a revolution in the battery industry.
