Lithium batteries for residential household energy storage systems.

Lithium ion batteries are rapidly becoming the preferred battery for many power applications, from wireless power tools to laptops and vehicles. More and more residential households are using lithium-ion battery energy storage systems.


In another survey report released by Bloomberg New Energy Finance, it was found that the cost of lithium-ion batteries is also continuously decreasing. In 2010, the price of lithium-ion batteries reached as high as $1000 per kilowatt hour, and in the following years, the price decreased by more than 20%. As of the end of 2016, the average selling price of lithium-ion batteries decreased by $209 per kilowatt hour.


However, Mark Chediak from Bloomberg New Energy Finance pointed out that these prices mainly target batteries provided by electric vehicle manufacturers. He said, "Due to the much lower order volume of developers of fixed energy storage systems, it is expected that the cost of purchasing batteries will be 51% higher than the cost paid by car manufacturers."


For these reasons, it is important to understand the cost of lithium-ion batteries and lead-acid batteries currently used in residential energy storage systems. They can be used as independent energy storage systems or in conjunction with residential solar power generation facilities to meet the energy needs of some or all residential users or businesses.



In terms of working life, it is expected that lithium-ion batteries will continue to operate for about 10 years, and they can reach higher levels of charging and discharging without significantly reducing capacity. The research conducted by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in the United States assumes that Tesla Powerwall can operate for 15 years without significantly losing its ability to store and release energy, with 5475 charge and discharge cycles during this period.


Lithium ion batteries can also charge faster at higher voltages. Although lead-acid batteries can take up to 16 hours to fully charge, even the slowest lithium-ion batteries can be fully charged in about four hours.


In terms of weight. Lithium ion batteries used for residential energy storage systems are not lightweight, but they are much lighter compared to lead-acid storage. A 13.5kWh Tesla Powerwall weighs approximately 278 pounds, a 1.7kWh lead-acid battery weighs approximately 132 pounds, and a lead-acid battery with the same capacity as the Powerwall will weigh over 1000 pounds.
