Comparison of Characteristics between Cylindrical Lithium Batteries and Square Lithium Batteries.


Lithium batteries can be divided into three packaging forms: cylindrical lithium batteries, square lithium batteries, and soft pack lithium batteries due to their different battery cell manufacturing processes. Each packaging has its own characteristics, reflecting the features of different types of lithium batteries.

1. Battery shape: Square lithium batteries can be of any size, so they cannot be compared to cylindrical batteries.
2. Rate characteristics: Due to the process limitations of welding multipole ears in cylindrical lithium batteries, the rate characteristics are slightly inferior to those of square multipole ear schemes
3. Discharge platform: The same positive electrode material, negative electrode material, and electrolyte are used, so theoretically the discharge platform is the same. However, square batteries have a slightly higher internal resistance, so the discharge platform is slightly higher.
4. Product quality: The cylindrical lithium battery process is very mature, with a low probability of secondary slitting defects in the pole pieces. In addition, the winding process is more mature and automated than the stacking process. Currently, the stacking process is still using a semi manual method, which has a negative impact on the quality of the battery.
5. Pole ear welding: Cylindrical lithium battery pole ears are easier to weld than square lithium batteries, and square batteries are prone to virtual welding, which affects battery quality.
6. PACK grouping: Circular lithium batteries are relatively easier to use, so the PACK scheme is simple and has good heat dissipation effect. When packing square lithium batteries, it is necessary to solve the problem of heat dissipation.
7. Structural characteristics: The chemical activity energy at the corners of square lithium batteries is poor, and the performance of lithium batteries deteriorates significantly after long-term use.
In short, whether it is cylindrical, square or soft pack batteries, the reason why they can develop rapidly is because they have been well applied in their respective fields of expertise.
