Why 18650 lithium batteries have an explosive history.
The vast majority of 18650 batteries are packaged in steel shells. Poor quality batteries, due to the lack of protective functions, will experience a sudden increase in internal pressure when overcharged. When exceeded, they will explode. Short circuits, high temperatures, or battery compression, deformation, or even puncture can all cause battery explosions.
After 30 years of development, the preparation process of 18650 batteries has become very mature. In addition to greatly improving performance, its safety is also very perfect. In order to prevent explosions from the sealed metal casing, 18650 batteries are now equipped with a safety valve at the top, which is a standard feature of every 18650 battery and the most important explosion-proof barrier.
When the internal pressure of the battery is too high, its top safety valve will open to exhaust and reduce pressure, avoiding explosion. However, when the safety valve is opened, the chemical substances leaked from inside the battery may react with oxygen in the air under high temperature conditions, and there is still a possibility of fire. In addition, some 18650 batteries now come with built-in protection boards, which have functions such as overcharge, over discharge, and short circuit protection, and have very high safety performance.
