What is a soft pack battery?

Lithium batteries can be divided into three packaging forms: cylindrical, square, and soft. Cylindrical and square batteries are packaged in steel and aluminum shells, respectively, while soft pack batteries use aluminum plastic film. Once internal problems occur, the soft pack battery will bulge from the weakest part of the battery surface, resulting in relatively high safety. Therefore, a soft pack battery refers to a battery that is coated with a polymer shell on the outer layer of a liquid lithium-ion battery.

According to Techno Systems Research, the proportion of soft pack batteries in mobile phone and laptop batteries has exceeded 80% in 2022. In the field of power batteries, the European and American new energy vehicle markets prefer soft pack power batteries more; According to data from Gaogong Lithium Battery, among the top 20 electric vehicle models sold in Europe in 2020, 15 cars used soft pack batteries. International car companies such as Volkswagen, Daimler, Mercedes Benz, Renault, and others have adopted soft pack batteries as the mainstream technology route, accounting for over 70% of the European electric vehicle market

The difference between soft pack batteries and hard pack batteries
(1) Packaging structure: The packaging of soft pack batteries is made of aluminum plastic film, while the packaging structure of hard pack batteries is made of steel or aluminum shell;
(2) Battery weight: Thanks to the packaging structure of the soft pack battery, compared to hard pack batteries of the same capacity, the weight of the soft pack battery is lighter;
(3) Battery shape: The shape of hard pack batteries is circular and square, while the shape of soft pack batteries can be designed according to actual needs, providing greater flexibility in shape;

(4) Safety: Compared to hard pack batteries, soft pack batteries have better exhaust performance. In extreme cases, soft pack batteries can only bulge or crack at most, and there is no risk of explosion like hard pack batteries. Although soft pack batteries have many advantages compared to hard pack batteries, there are relatively few existing models of soft pack batteries, and the cost of developing new types of soft pack batteries is high. Moreover, the domestic supply chain is not perfect enough, so the market demand that soft pack lithium batteries can meet is still relatively small.
