Advantages of cylindrical lithium-ion batteries

1) Good monomer consistency;


2) The mechanical properties of the individual cell are good. Compared with square and soft pack batteries, closed cylindrical cells can achieve the highest bending strength under approximate size;


3) The technology is mature and the cost is low, but at the same time, the space for cost optimization has also been almost consumed;


4) The individual energy is small, and in the event of an accident, the form is easy to control, but this is also becoming the reason why it is being replaced (as the popular saying goes, what achieves you will also destroy you, and what cannot kill you will also make you strong, the same applies to things)


5) Pack cylindrical lithium-ion batteries


Circular batteries have relatively easier to use characteristics, so the PACK method is simple and has good heat dissipation effect. When PACKing square batteries, it is necessary to handle the heat dissipation problem well.

Disadvantages of cylindrical lithium-ion batteries:

1) In the context of electric vehicles, the number of cylindrical cells in the battery system is large, which increases the complexity of the battery system. Regardless of the organization or management system, compared to the other two types of batteries, the system level cost of cylindrical batteries is relatively high;


2) Under uneven temperature conditions, the probability of a large number of battery cell characteristics being differentiated increases. Of course, the reason why Tesla chose 18650 at the beginning of its design is believed to be a helpless choice, because 10 years ago, only cylindrical batteries were qualified lithium-ion batteries that could be processed in large quantities. The safety and thermal management requirements of batteries are actually the driving force for the development of their powerful electronic control systems.


3) The increase in energy density is already very small. In 2016, according to news, Chaowei achieved a single cell capacity of 4050mAh and a specific energy of 306Wh/kg for battery cells. There has been no record of a higher energy density since then. Within a given space, only stubbornly knocking on materials is recognized as a difficult path to take.
