Lithium batteries have sparked a wave of new energy electric ships.
With many industries around the world achieving electrification, the shipbuilding industry is no exception facing a wave of electrification. Lithium batteries, as a new type of power source in ship electrification, have become an important direction for the transformation of traditional ships.
1、 The wave of ship electrification has arrived
With the continuous progress of technology, the shipbuilding industry is actively responding to the call for environmental protection and energy efficiency, introducing more and more lithium-ion electric boats with various uses to the market, especially in the small boat market such as yachts and motorboats, which are more significantly popular in the market. Electric ships, with their advantages of zero emissions, low noise, and higher energy efficiency, provide users with a better experience for short distance vessel driving.
2、 Advantages and disadvantages of
marine lithium batteries
Compared to using lead-acid batteries, lithium-ion battery electric boats will have more obvious advantages.
Advantages: 1. Large capacity and long endurance: Lithium batteries have a higher volume energy density compared to lead-acid batteries, and the same volume can achieve more than twice the range of lead-acid batteries; 2. Lightweight and miniaturized: Lithium batteries are relatively lightweight and are easier to layout and install due to their smaller size, which helps reduce the burden on electric ships and improve overall efficiency; 3. Charging speed: Lithium batteries in electric boats can use fast charging technology, which greatly shortens the charging time compared to lead-acid batteries. It is more suitable for electric boat usage scenarios with high-frequency fast charging needs (such as speedboats, motorboats, etc.).
The disadvantage is that the cost of lithium-ion batteries for electric ships is relatively high, which increases the purchase cost of electric ships. Therefore, lithium-ion batteries will be popularized relatively quickly on high-end electric ships now.
3、 How to Choose Lithium Battery for Marine Propulsion
When choosing
lithium batteries for marine propulsion, lithium iron phosphate and ternary lithium are two common choices.
Lithium iron phosphate batteries have higher safety compared to ternary lithium batteries. In case of extreme environments, they have a stronger ability to cope with high temperatures and external collisions, and generally have a longer cycle life. And ternary lithium batteries, due to their high energy density, can provide electric boats with higher range. At the same time, ternary lithium batteries for electric boats can also be customized with fast charging function, achieving higher discharge rate current, which will be suitable for electric boats with high requirements in speed, flexibility, and high-frequency fast charging.
Considering the trend of replacing lead-acid batteries with lithium batteries, it is recommended that ship manufacturers choose strong lithium battery manufacturers based on the actual range of the product, the speed and power of the thruster, and customize the production of reasonable parameters and stable and reliable electric ship lithium batteries to create products with better experience.
