Generally speaking, safety issues with lithium-ion batteries manifest as combustion or even explosion. The root cause of these problems lies in the thermal runaway inside the battery. In addition, external factors such as overcharging, ignition, compression, puncture, short circuit, etc. can also lead to safety issues.
During the charging and discharging process, lithium-ion batteries generate heat. If the heat generated exceeds the battery's heat dissipation capacity, the lithium-ion battery will overheat, and the battery material will undergo destructive side reactions such as SEI film decomposition, electrolyte decomposition, positive electrode decomposition, reaction between negative electrode and electrolyte, and reaction between negative electrode and adhesive.
1. There is a high reactivity between the electrolyte of lithium batteries and the positive and negative electrodes, especially at high temperatures. To improve the safety of the battery, improving the safety of the electrolyte is one of the effective methods. The safety hazards of electrolytes can be effectively solved by adding functional additives, using new lithium salts, and practical new solvents.
2. For negative electrode materials, improving the thermal stability of SEI films is a key method to enhance the safety of negative electrode materials, as their surface is often the most prone to thermal chemical decomposition and heat release in lithium-ion batteries.
3. Setting up battery safety valves, hot melt fuses, connecting components with positive temperature coefficients in series, using thermal sealing diaphragms, loading specialized protection circuits, and specialized battery management systems are also means to enhance safety.
4. Lithium batteries release heat during operation, and if not released in time, they will self ignite and explode. It can be managed through the battery thermal management system. The thermal management system equipped with new energy vehicles is a subsystem of the battery management system, which can cool the battery when the temperature is too high and preheat it when the temperature is low, thus better utilizing the battery's performance.
