How did polymer lithium batteries rise?
In recent years, the rise of polymer batteries has become an undeniable phenomenon in the battery industry, which is related to the lightweight requirements of many digital products in the market.
Lithium ion batteries generally have four major components in structure: positive electrode, negative electrode, electrolyte, separator, and outer shell. The battery adopts a spiral winding structure inside, and is separated between the positive and negative electrodes by a very fine and highly permeable polyethylene film isolation material. Before the emergence of polymer batteries, liquid lithium batteries represented by 18650 were commonly used in lithium batteries. However, with the emergence of thinning requirements in the market, the existing market of 18650 was gradually eroded.
Compared with liquid lithium-ion batteries, polymer lithium-ion batteries have the advantages of thinning, arbitrary area and shape, and do not have safety issues such as leakage, combustion and explosion. Therefore, the shell material can be lighter, which can improve the specific capacity of the entire battery. At present, polymer batteries have replaced 18650 and 16650 in laptops, and square batteries in smartphones. From the perspective of product design and production, polymers have the greatest design flexibility and can be customized according to the design requirements of end products, including the production of shaped batteries, making full use of product space, and their production automation level is constantly improving.
