If the 18650 lithium battery is used improperly during charging and discharging, it may burn, explode, and even cause personal injury. Short circuits in 18650 lithium batteries, mainly including internal and external short circuits, can cause explosions in
18650 batteries. There are several reasons for internal short circuits, one of which is due to production process issues where impurities remain inside. During the use of lithium batteries, internal positive and negative pole short circuits occur, leading to explosions. Another reason is that external needles or pressure can cause internal material short circuits, which in turn can lead to fire or explosion.
1. Internal short circuit: Structural or process defects leading to insufficient insertion of the terminal ear, insufficient wrapping of the diaphragm, burrs, discounted diaphragm, etc. Generally speaking, pole ear insertion occurs in structures with thick batteries and internal parallel connections. If the insulation of the pole ear position is not in place, it is easy to cause internal acute short circuits and combustion or explosion in subsequent finished products or during use. However, this situation is almost rare now, unless there are external factors.
2. External short circuit: Explosion after combustion caused by external short circuit of lithium batteries below 1AH is not common. Generally speaking, it is mainly due to bulging or simply burning off the terminal ear. Personally, I have analyzed in depth the combustion caused by external short circuit of power batteries or large capacity mobile phone batteries. This involves improper handling by the customer - when installing the metal outer box, the ear insulation was not considered, resulting in abnormal battery smoke and combustion at the installation site; Power batteries often lack sufficient structural fixing measures (due to inadequate consideration), which can cause damage to the external insulation protective film or connection wire skin of the battery due to shaking of the battery pack during customer use, ultimately leading to short circuit combustion.
2、 High temperature
If the temperature is too high, it can also cause the 18650
lithium battery to explode. The normal operating temperature range for lithium batteries is from 0 to 45 ℃ during charging; Discharge -20~65 ℃; Store at 0-45 ℃. Generally speaking, the lithium battery protection board is set to protect the battery at a high charging temperature of 50 ℃; High temperature discharge protection at 70 ℃. If there is no high temperature protection, continuous discharge or storage of lithium batteries will basically cause lithium battery explosions.
3、 Overcharge explosion
This is the most dangerous and feared by the company, but it still happens occasionally. From the understanding of the situation, there are two points: a. The customer does not use the matching charger as required, which damages the protective circuit. Generally speaking, customers charge without time limit, and this situation is difficult to avoid; b. If the 18650 lithium battery is improperly assembled and the protective board fails, it will also explode in a mess. The same applies to a single battery.
