Analysis of the causes of explosions in metal shell batteries such as
18650 lithium batteries, why do lithium batteries explode, and what are the main reasons?
1. Firstly, a short circuit in a lithium battery can lead to an explosion. A sealed internal short circuit can cause the battery to generate high temperatures in a short period of time, causing the liquid and a small amount of steam inside to expand and release a large amount of gas. There is simply no time to remove it from the vent valve, resulting in the formation of high temperature and pressure in a short period of time, leading to an explosion;

2. Poor quality lithium batteries can cause explosions due to insufficient cleanliness and dryness of the production environment during the coating or winding process, which allows too much moisture and impurities to enter the battery;
3. If the electrolyte used in lithium batteries is not qualified, it can decompose water under certain conditions and cause explosions;
4. The adhesive is not qualified, causing powder to fall off and burrs to form, resulting in membrane puncture, internal short circuit, and ultimately leading to lithium battery explosion;
5. Overcharging of lithium batteries can cause thermal runaway if the charging time is too long. Once the lithium battery is overcharged, the voltage will quickly rise, ultimately leading to an explosion;
Compared to metal shell batteries, soft pack polymer lithium batteries generally do not explode. Poor quality batteries or artificially induced short circuits in batteries can often cause battery fires, as the hot air in soft pack polymer lithium batteries will quickly dissipate and high temperatures can cause fires. Lithium batteries will first experience high temperatures, smoke, fire or explosion before catching fire. The best way to cool down when smoke is detected is to use water, as it may not ignite if the temperature drops within about 10 seconds of the smoke. For safety reasons, it is best to choose lithium batteries produced by reputable manufacturers first.
